The best thing...

Years ago, in ancient Greece, there was a philosopher by the name of Heraclitus. One of his greatest (or rather most well known) statements was "you can never step in the same river twice", meaning to say that change is permanent, unavoidable, and always happening. Despite this fact, we all tend to have different interpretations on change. For some, we accept it with open arms, others we fight it strongly, only to lose the battle in the end. That's the issue with fighting change, more often than not, you're fighting a losing battle. However, it never seems to stop us from trying does it? We're all guilty of trying to act younger than we are at times, we take pictures of everything we do to hold on to certain moments in time forever, and we tend to get uncomfortable or upset when something breaks the cycles or habits we're used to. Ever get upset when the internet takes more than 5 seconds to do something? Its because we expect it to be faster, but something is different from the way things normally are, and we get upset about it. :-)

For example, in Chapter 16 Holden says...

"The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody'd move. You could go there a hundred thousand times, and that Eskimo would still be just finished catching those two fish, the birds would still be on their way south...Nobody'd be different. The only thing that would be different would be you" (Salinger 121)

What is it that Holden enjoys about the museum? Does he seem to be more excited about the fact that he's different? Or more that everything is the same? How do you think Holden would react if every time he returned to the museum it was new exhibits? Would he feel the same way or be upset?

If we infer that this is true, that maybe change is what makes Holden upset. What does this tell us about maybe how Holden perceives the world around him? For example, what connection might there be between "change" and how Holden hates "phonies"?

With this in mind, I would like you answer ONE of the following questions in the comments section below:
1) If it was up to Holden...when would we stop "changing" and why? Be sure to support it with an example and explanation from the book.

2) What is a place you feel never changes even though you do? Do you like this about that particular location? Be sure to explain your answer. (5 Sentences Minimum)

  1. 2. My grandmother`s house is where I feel never changes. Her house is in Busan and I go to her once a year. My body and mind always grow up but the house never changes. I can remind all of the things around there. I like this place because I can recall all the things by just going there. Those things become a huge memorial to me.

  2. 2. Seorak Mountain is the place where I feel like no changes would happen forever. Even though the time passed whenever I visit, it seems like nothibg have changed. Trees and the rocks are placed on the same spot. Scents of the trees are always same. I get older every moment and either does Seorak Mountain. However as I climb up I feel like I'm in the past. The road recalls my memory. I can't point out the particular place of Seorak Mountain. Every parts leads me to my past.

  3. 2. The place I feel never changes even though I change is my mother's parents' home.
This place is located in the 'UiSeung' which is placed in the country side. It has clean air and I can also see the lots of stars. In that place, I always feel comfortable than being in the city. This place makes my mind healed. After I went there and came back to home which is in Seoul, I feel much more better than before. I think this place has its own special power that heals my mind like Holden feel in the museum. So, I like my mother's parents' home which is placed in 'UiSeung'.

Whenever I go to my grandmother's house, where is Gyunggi Do San Bon, I feel this place never changes so much. It is not a country side, but it can't be called as city. It has many stores, apartments, and parks. The most interesting part of this city is San Bon Park which is not that big. However, it is connected to mountain that makes this park special. There are rollar skating place, water drinking place and dog training place. I feel cozy and comfortable in that place.

    My home-where I was born.
It is different from the residential place. There are memories like my first birthday, first step, first saying, and so on. My parents took pictures of my baby-hood, and whenever I see that pictures, it recalls me of emotions. Though I grow up, all the nostelgia overwhelm the hardships from present life. This is the reason I think home is never-changeable pad.

  10. Choice 1) I think the time we should stop "changing" is when we are having a spare time in our life. Also, we are adult when we turn 19 and we have to decide almost everything by our own. Then people don't care about things. For example Holden says everything looks same when he goes to the museum. I think museum is the place where people feel rest, so it's good for them because pictures and figures are not changing.

  17. 1) I think we have to stop changing when we felt first, pure, and fresh impression. It means we want to keep our happy moments forever. 22. 1) We stop changing when we want to let someting memorable and precious be. This is because we do not try to forget something important to us and cherish the time we have great experience. For Holden, museum is the place that he likes and he feels comfortable because he can remind his childhood. Also there is no change in the museum, so he can always remind childhood. That means he wants to stop chaning because of his great moment in the museum.

I think the place where never changes is my room. My room is always messy because I don't like cleaning my room. Sometimes I clean my room, but my room turns out to be messy again. However, I like my room because it is my private space. Even though my room is always messy, I put important things in the right places and never move away. This is why I think that my room is not changing.

The place that I think never going to be changed is Gacheon,Samnam. This place is my mom's hometown actually, and the fact that there's my mom's hometown led me to visit often. First reason that I think there won't change is that there's designated as a greenbelt field. Also however I try hard to change there, existence of my and my mom's memory of there will not allow there to be changed.
