"I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life..."(Salinger 16).

"I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It's awful. If I'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the opera."
-Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye: Chapter 3

Now, it's no secret that we all lie. In fact, social media expert Pamela Meyer says:
"On a given day, studies show that you may be lied to anywhere from 10 to 200 times. Now granted, many of those are white lies. But in another study, it showed that strangers lied three times within the first 10 minutes of meeting each other." (2011)

In other words, we are no strangers to lying, whether we ourselves lie, or we can tell when other people are lying to us. However, how does it change the way we view the story? If I told you I compulsively (often) lie, and then told you a story about my life, how much of it would you believe? Would you not trust anything I say? Would you only trust bits and pieces? Would you think I was being honest with you, and not lying at all (at least for the story I tell you)?

Or would you think like our friends from Gaelic Storm? Who (in fine Irish music) remind us:
Don't let the truth get in the way of a great story.

  4. Choise/ Option 2: In page 21, Holden suddenly lies to Ackley that he was blind. Holden said "i think i'm going to blind…Mother daring, give me your hand. Why won't you give me your hand?"(Pg 21).Since,Holden was really annoyed by Ackley,so Holden wants to tease him. Holden knew that when he acted like a blind person, old Ackley will annoyed hell out of him.

  5. Choise/ Option1:Any fool can tell the truth, but it requires a man of some sense to know how to lie well. by Samuel Butler.
I agree this sentence. because Holden is not always tells a lie to his friend or somebody else but sometimes when he need to tells a lie then he tells a lie around him thats why i think holden has a sense to know how to lie well
in my case when I want to absent academy i said to my mother "mom one of my friend is really sick so i need to help him" like Holden

  6. Choise/Option 1:
Among the many sentences in the website, the most impressive sentence that I saw is "A liar should have good memory."
In the Chapter 3, there is a story about that Ackley pestered Holden. In that process, Ackley picked up a picture of Sally Hayes and that time, Holden thought that 'maybe he picked a picture at least five thousand times.' On top of that, when the Ackley came to him and stood right in his light, he said that 'I've read this same sentence about twenty times.' These huge number may be lead to discovering the lies. So not to be discovered, he should remember what the number is when the Ackley do the same action.

  7. Choice/Option 1: The quote that best describes about lying is “Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth.” By Franklin D. Roosevelt. As you can literally see in Page 16 top of Chapter 3, Holden is saying if somebody asks where he is going, he always says going to the opera even though he is going to the store to buy magazine. In my opinion, Holden repeats about he is going to the opera, when it is the same situation like going to the store because, other people could think that going to the opera looks like polite. Maybe, he doesn’t like to see it. So, lying about going to the opera do not make Holden to go and see the opera for real. I think Holden is lying about trivial, unimportant things.

  8. Choice 2. Holden said "I read a lot of book and i like them."
But after that, he said "They (classical book, war boos, mysteries) don't knock me out too much."
So I think Holden doesn't like books a lot. Because, that's no reason that he like books that don't knock him.

  9. Option 1:
Truth is beautiful, without doubt; but so are lies. - Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
Truth is beautiful because it is like a bamboo. Bamboo lives more than 100 years. However, it flowers only before it dies. Bamboo is beautiful because it lives long without changes and the flower is one of the most beautiful one.
Lies is also beautiful because it is like a rose. Rose lives a short period of time and has thorns, but is is beautiful and has a good scent. Rose is beautiful because the good parts(colorful and scent) covers the bad parts(dies early and thorns).

Holden is lying because he is tend to cover his inner mind. Unlike his outer part (being cold, ignore), his inner part is so weak. So he tend to protect his weak point by telling lies.

quote : A lie can travel halfway around while the truth is putting on its shoes.

Lies, whether it is favorable or not, intend to veil the truth. Because of this distinctive purpose, lies tend to spread very quickly. It explains that why people, both who tell a lie and who believe it, overlook the truth.
So I agree Holden is faking something, however I can't make sure which part it is.

  12. In option 1, those two sites didn't have precise and exact quotes that I felt while I was reading holden's lies. So I chose option 2.

    Choose/ option 2

In this chapter, I can see more than three lies that holden did to us and I want to share the very first lie that holden did in chapter 3.

On page 17, line 14. 'He damn near blew the roof off'.

I think holden just wanted to emphasize what he heard in the chapel or maybe he is born to be a great storyteller. Around me there are lots of great storyteller who are fun and makes me laugh. They use lots of ways to make me listen attentively. One of the method that makes me attention to is composing story more interesting. To rebulid story more interesting, they should aggravate what they want to tell. So I think that holden is lying to convey what he felt more thrilling to us.

My conclusion is he is just born like this. It's his instinct maybe.

About the truth.....actually, you'll all know that the roof can't be blew off because of the fart. Even though it was a 'terrific fart'. It would be just loud enough for people in chapel to listen the fart sound.

  13. Choice/Option 1 The quote 'The public will believe anything, so long as it is not founded on truth.' makes me think our attitude to how to accept amount of information that are not checked and testified. We just believe it without trying to check if it is right or not. Also, this sentence can explain my feeling about Holden's lies. I feel he wants not to say frankly and truthfully, just to lead a talk with others on his own way. To do that, he seems be lying to us because people who talked to Holden usually believe his lies if these are not found on truth and they do not recognize on the facts.

page18 what really knocks me out is a book that when you are all done reading it you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific
friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it

i think this long sentence is a lie
first of all he is illiterate so i think he actually don't read too much i guess and he just read some funny or comic stuff just for fun sometimes
so that sentence looks just bluffing to me

  15. Choice2:

"So when I told old Spenser I had to go to the gym to get my equipment and stuff."

He told old Spenser that he is going to go to the gym, which was a total lie and even his fencing equipment wasn't there at all. Furthemore, he went to his room instead of going to the gym.

    ReplyDelete
  16. choice 2

Holden said 'I had to go to the gym to get my equipment and stuff'. But it is a lie to trick Mr.Spencer because he didn't want to stay anymore with Mr.Spencer.
Moreover he said 'It was pretty nice to get back to my room...'. It is also lie. Does anyone feel so good after scolding? Maybe everyone hates it. So I think Holden may deceive his feeling.

  17. Choice/option 1

"Any fool can tell the truth, but it requires a man of some sense to know how to lie well." Samuel Butler (1835 - 1902)

I think tell a lie is kind of human's authority. Of course abusing is not good, but people instinctually have a lie if there situation is not good. Therefore, when you have to lie , it doesn't really matter, Holden's too.

  18. choice 2

    p.16
"So when I told old Spencer I had to go to the gym to get my equipment and stuff"

Holden says sheer lie. I think he doesn't want stay with Mr.Spencer. So he lied that he go to the gym and get his equipment. In my case I understand Holden feeling. If I'm with some teacher except friendly teacher, I also have same feeling with Holden. Awkward feeling like that.

  19. Option 1
Liars when they speak the truth are not believed.
Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC), from Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers

In the book, Holden said he reads books a lot and he likes reading it. However, these facts made me suspicious because he is a big fat liar. He lied to Old Spencer that he had to get something from the gym. And also, he will lie he is going to the opera(actually not) whenever someone asks him "where are you going?". So because of those lies he had spoken in the story, that makes my mind think his preference for book is also a lie either.

  20. In page 16 "If I'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the opera" In this situation, there is any reason to hit the lie. This is not a white lie, and also his lie give any positive effects to Holden. Holden is familier in tricking people, and he lies for some fun.

  21. Choice1. "The best liar is he who makes the smallest amount of lying go the longest way"

In this book, there is a possibility that holden lies. But we cant find lies easily which are false things even though he said he is a liar. So i think that hoden is a best liar because he makes the small amount of lying or more but it goes very long. Maybe we are reading lies from this book

  22. Choice 1

The best liar is he who makes the smallest amount of lying go the longest way.
    Samuel Butler (1835 - 1902)

I really agree with this sentence and also I think this fits well with Holden's situation. First, before this homework, I never thought that Holden was lying to us, because it was just small amout of lying, such as reading whole 'Out of Africa'book. Also Holden didn't get caught to Mr.Spencer because it was small lie that lasted long. This made him be a perfect liar.

  23. Option1."The truth is more important than the fact." I felt uncomfortable because of the unbelievable protagonist. This is the first time that I have to worry about that this story is true or not. From now on I should concentrate on not only the story but also authenticity.

  24. Option1
I choose this : But wonder on, till truth makes all things plain.

The reason why Holden continues lying is not ruining, cheating, or stealing something. He just lies habitually for fun. He doesn't use his head at lying. He just thinks out loud. Therefore, complicated situation follows the increase of lies. Then he feel confused and tired. He will also make some mistakes. It is more dangerous than lying with intentions.

'Ambition drove many men to become false; to have one thought locked in the breast, another ready on the tongue'

I can't actually say that holden have the ambition about himself, his life, but I guess his thought just came out even thinking. Like in this book, you can see that he just tell a lie like he's going to opera even though he is not. It looks like that he even don't think it once again, he just lie to someone. That's the reason that i choose this quote for it.

  27. Option 1
"Lies are like children: they're hard work, but it's worth it because the future depends on them." by Pam Davis

In the book, Holden lies much even on small things that sometimes it's hard to find out whether Holden ever said a true fact. If he doesn't tell a lie, than we can find out that he overstates the truth. On the last assignment, I mentioned Holden as a childish boy, so I thought this quote matches with him. He lies much, and his future depends on the lies he had done before.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Option2
On p.16 Holden said Mr.Spencer that he should go to the gym and get his equipment and stuff. But he was totally lying to Mr.Spencer. There was no equipment and he didn't go to the gym, either. I think he lied just because he didn't want to talk with Mr.Spencer anymore but wanted to go home.

  29. option 1

    Truly, to tell lies is not honorable;
but when the truth entails tremendous ruin,
    To speak dishonorably is pardonable.

Most tell lies so that do not hurt someone's fellings or to make someone feel better.
Telling the truth can get you into trouble. It sometimes ruins your relationship with others.
We need white lies when it's a "must lie" situation.

When Ackley visited the room, Holden wanted to ask him to get out of the room.
But He didn't said "Get the hell out of here"
He just said "I've read this sentence about twenty times since you came in"
I think it's a kind of white lie. If He didn't cover his inner mind, they might fight each other.

  30. When Holden told old Spencer that he had to go to the gym to to get his equipment, readers may regard it as a lie. He just wanted to get out of there in order to escape from the teacher because of inconvenience. He may thought, "I dont like to be here sorry."

  31. Option1
"False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil." by Plato

In the story, Holden is very good at lying to the people around him. I think he became evil because he lies too often. He lies too much even the false words are not big deals. Therefore, I think too much lying makes Holden abnormal and selfish.
